Earth Care: Your Body Is Soil: The Science of Inner Ecology

When I ran The Grateful Garden retail store, soil was the backbone of everything. We sold it, obsessed over it, and relied on it to grow thriving plants. I studied soil like some people study scripture. And in the middle of all those conversations with customers, often over text, something strange started happening. My phone began autocorrecting soil to soul. Every. Single. Time.

At first, it was funny. But then it hit me: soil really is the soul of the garden. Without healthy, living soil, nothing thrives. And maybe the same is true for us.

That realization led me deep into the world of “living soil.” This is soil so biologically alive and balanced that it doesn’t need constant amendments. In a living soil system, microorganisms, minerals, fungi, and roots work together in harmony. Each element supports the whole.

Isn’t that what we all want for our bodies? To be so intact and balanced that our inner ecology supports us with ease?

This is what The Ecology of You™ is all about: cultivating practices that bring your inner soil, your microbiome, your nervous system, your mind, into harmony with the greater Earth.

Earth in Crisis, or Us?

You might be wondering: But Todd, isn’t this supposed to be about Earth Care?

Here’s the connection. We talk about the Earth being in crisis, climate change, pollution, soil degradation, species loss, wildfires, microplastics. The headlines are everywhere.

But here’s the truth: Earth will be fine. She has survived asteroid impacts, ice ages, and mass extinctions.

It’s humans who are struggling. Our systems are polluted, depleted, overheated. Our inner ecosystems are mirroring the outer ones. Because we are not separate from nature. Every cell in our bodies is built of the same minerals and patterns that shape rivers, forests, and soils.

When we poison ourselves, we’re more likely to poison the lawn. When we speak harshly to ourselves, we often speak harshly to others. When we feed ourselves junk and fear, we feed the same into our communities and politics.

The Pond and the Pattern

Think of a healthy pond. It looks chaotic, fish dart, insects buzz, algae grows, but

beneath it all is a perfect balance. Every interaction, even the violent ones, contributes to the harmony of the whole.

Now think of a balanced day in your life. You wake up rested, things flow smoothly, interactions are kind and easy. One shift in your internal state ripples outward. Imagine if everyone you interacted with was in that same positive balance. That’s how ecosystems thrive: through resonance.

Self Care is Earth Care

Here’s the shift I want to see us make:

  • Tending to your inner ecosystem is tending to Earth.

  • Healing your soil, your gut, your nervous system, your thoughts, ripples outward.

  • Self care is Earth care. Earth care is self care. They are not separate. They never were.

When we restore the ecology within, we restore the ecology around us.

👉 Your Turn: What’s one small way you can tend to your “inner soil” today? Maybe it’s eating live food, taking a walk in the forest, or simply noticing how your thoughts “fertilize” your day. Every action of care—inner or outer—feeds the whole garden of life.

I'll be exploring this much more deeply with our Autumn Equinox Ecology of You cohort. If that speaks to you, applications are open > Autumn Equinox Cohort
